Tale of the Tofu Steak

About a month ago, my sister, niece and myself started a challenge between the three of us for motivation and support in leading a healthy lifestyle. It's been going well and this week my niece suggested a different challenge for each day. Today the challenge was to try a new food. If you know me, I feel like I've tried every food I'm ever going to try so this posed a bit of a challenge!

At first, I told them I was going to go to Meijers and look for a new food and then I remembered the Tofu Steak I had purchased awhile ago and has been in the freezer ever since. You see, when I bought them, I thought they would be round like a hamburger...not! I opened them up to find 2 'steaks' in a pkg. ,square in size and brown like cardboard, not real inviting! So, I pulled out the George Foreman grill thinking if anyone can make it taste okay, George could do it. Meanwhile, I get an e-mail from my niece telling me how brave I am for trying this and suggesting I add a lot of seasoning:) I take her advice, put the 'steak' on the grill, let it 'unfreeze' a bit and then added some seasoning. I let it cook for a bit, took it off and put it on an Arnold Select roll. Before 'closing it up' I added ketchup, lettuce and tomato to it. At this point, I want to say it didn't look too bad. I thought, maybe I should add chips to the plate to help me disguise the taste and then thought 'no' because I'd have to add points for them and I wasn't into that.

Why am I eating this food I'm not too sure of you ask. Tofu has a lot of protein in it. This 'steak'( which is in no way comparable to a T-Bone) has 10 grams of protein in this one square measuring 2 1/2 x 3 1/2. Thats a lot of protein! ! It is low in fat, and has Vitamin E and is a good source of calcium.
Sounds good right? Well, I decided against the chips and had only the sandwich with a glass of milk.

How did the 'steak' taste? For those of you (and me) who get their soy in with foods like Gardenburger and Crumbles, this is a bit of a change, but not all that bad:) It didn't taste like cardboard, but definitely had a distinct taste,(remember, there is ketchup, lettuce and tomato on this sandwich too). Would I have it again? Yes. Why? because there are 3 left in the pkg. Will I buy them again? Probably. Why? Because it's healthy for you, is much more filling than a hamburger and definitely adds variety to the menu. So, thanks Lisa for the challenge. Wait until you see what I have planned for next weeks challenge:) JK!

  1. Hi Jan! Thanks for sharing the Tofu story with us and am sad to say I did not make the challenge of eating something new this week but did have my first artichoke a few weeks ago! Our challenge chicks' group has been a great WW incentive to me and just want to share with anyone else out there that there is power in creating small buddie groups out there in this flesh fight that many of us struggle with. This week Jan challenege us, and me personally to track and send my progress each day to them both and have to confess, at first, I felt like, hmmmm.... I dont think I am going to do this just because she challenged me, and well, I had a list of excuses and then.... something came over me, and I knew she had my best interst at heart and decided to meet the challenge. I didnt send them all my days but it got me back on track with tracking and today... I got my payoff it... I lost 3 pounds! Thanks challenge chicks and just wanted to say that we need to be open to change if we want to see change... which is what I needed to be reminded of. Jan.. thanks for being a great ww leader and sister! and if I see those tofu steaks, I am going to try them. And for those that are Catholic you had a "steak" but didnt break our no meat on Friday rule!
